Becoming possessed by the demon of rockabilly music can be a shock to your lifestyle. One day you've never heard of Elroy Ditzell. The next day you're listening to his records. The day after that you're dressing like him. There's no law that says it has to happen to everybody, but more often than not, it does. But if your ultimate goal is to be crowned king or queen of rockabilly, you've missed the point altogether. This whole scene is about having a great time and sharing the fun with everybody. No one person has more of a right to the music than any other. Please accept this open invitation: If the music moves you, join the riot and have a ball. - KM

OUR MISSION

No denying it. Old stuff is cool. Especially the music, cars, clothes, architecture and household goods created between V-J Day and JFK DOA Day. Something about electric guitar and doghouse bass, fender fins and hemi engines, rayon shirts and acetate dresses, neon boomerangs and canted glass that tickles the pleasure center in many of our brains. It has nothing to do with nostalgia. It has everything to do with recognizing the best of our own culture. It has nothing to do with right-wing politics or a desire to live in the past. It has everything to do with preserving and celebrating here in America those things for which we are known throughout the world.

The Big C Jamboree celebrates a contemporary life-style which doesn't really have a name. And which probably shouldn't lest it turn into some kind of tired formula or straightjacket. The terms "rockabilly" and "rockin'" begin to describe it, and you'll find plenty here about the Midwest rockabilly scene. But there's more than just that. Musically, there are the related forms - R&B, rock n roll, hillbilly, swing, surf, psychobilly, blues, gypsy jazz. There's vintage clothes, from a 1948 cocktail dress to a 1962 sharkskin suit. There's classic cars, from stock to custom, fat fenders to fins. There's architecture that looks like spacecraft, furniture that looks like amoebas and kitchen appliances that look like locomotives. There's anything cool - whether pop or obscure - which might have been created last week but which is firmly rooted in postwar American culture.
